Goodwill Donation Value Guide
Should you donate or sell an item? On the Goodwill site, they list the fair market value of many types of items so you can figure out your tax deduction. (This link takes you to Goodwill Northern New England... so you may want to look up your area for more accurate prices.)
This can also help you determine whether it is worth the effort to sell something.

Donating to Local Groups
Check the website of local churches, temples, and mosques to see if they are collecting specific items (they may have a monthly theme) or if they have donation bins in their parking lots. They may actually gather items to donate to a local charity that they are not affiliated with.

You can also check with your town's Council on Aging, library, or schools if you have items that you believe would be used by the individuals they serve. Nonprofit and for-profit nursing homes/rehabilitation centers may also collect books or craft supplies for residents.

Before making a donation of items that the organization hasn't specified that they are collecting, call and speak to someone about what you would like to give so you don't burden them with things they are not equipped to deal with.
