You recognize yourself as being in

Stage 1: Recognition

“When did this happen?”

What’s happening

You’re beginning to notice subtle misalignment between your life and your home. Nothing feels chaotic. But something feels off.

A drawer no longer closes. A closet feels crowded. Items appear that don’t seem connected to your life anymore.

This stage is often quiet. You’re simply noticing that your home may be holding onto earlier versions of your life.

The belief shift

Decluttering doesn’t begin with getting rid of things. It begins with noticing what no longer fits your life now. Recognition is the first step on the Decluttering Decision Path.

Your first step

Choose one space in your home.

Ask yourself:

  • What role does this space play in my life today? (Think activities, storage, and display.)

  • Write the answer down.

That simple question begins the process of deciding what truly belongs.
